Cell Phone Fees

Cell phone contracts are loaded with fine print. The fine print can come back to haunt you if not addressed before signing. You may not be able to get the terms changed but you should at least be aware of the risks and exposure when comparing plans and providers.

Filing a Cell Phone Complaint

Review your contract. Usually the contact is accessible by logging into your account if you don’t have a hard copy. Prepare your complaint and review the various options to file a complaint, visit the section on “Effective Complaining“. In this case look for a store to begin voicing your complaint rather than starting with a phone call.

Of course, use the power of social media and craft a professional complaint and post on their social site(s). Another standard place to file any type of complaint is with the Better Business Bureau.

Returns and Exchanges

Returns and exchanges can vary greatly by provider and are more complex depending on the number and types of devices. Understanding this policy to recognize your exposure once the packaging is opened or the device is activated.

Restocking Fee

This normally applies if the device is not returned in its original unopened packaging and has not been activated. Otherwise, when a device is returned it can no longer be sold as a “new” device and the store will likely resell at a lower price. The restocking fee is to recover the delta between the “new” price and the “used” sell price. These fees usually range from $35-$45.

SPRINT – Other Limitations and Fees

Ways to reduce cell phone costs

Keeping up with the Joneses is one way of keeping your bank account balance lower than it could be. Sacrificing a little luxury can go a long ways to reducing cell phone costs.

Watch for promotions. These are rampant among the major carriers; it’s tough to watch TV without seeing at least one. Below are a few other considerations which most involve risk/reward decision that fits your situation and others are simply a result of awareness and planning.

  • Avoid getting a new model and extend the life of each phone
  • Prepaid Plans
  • Bundling with one carrier if considering multiple devices or a family share plan
  • Consider forgoing the insurance
  • Paperless, automated, or online payments may be a cheaper option
  • International roaming and calls can quickly add up. Contact carrier in advance to work out the best way to reduce fees
  • Use Wi-Fi as much as possible. Wait to use data until you can connect to free Wi-Fi
  • Understand your data usage and ways to reduce or eliminate associated fees
  • Ensure the hot-spot feature isn’t left on any more than necessary
  • Consider a plan without a contract
